Green Bean

When Great Expectations came out, we were so excited my friend and I individually watched the behind the scenes on VH1. The director described how he'd infused the movie with green, his color of romance. When we finally saw the movie, the effect aggressively unsubtle: Gwyneth and Ethan were dressed in green in every scene while the decor was lush and green.

I watched Shopgirl this morning, and the lovestory was also a little too green. Cute, but a little too green. I'm still refusing to see green as a romantic color, though I will admit that when I don my green scrubs my eyes go from slate blue to an adorable green that I quite enjoy.

Klaxon, Klaxoff

My mom's new car has Sirus. I was bopping down the GW Parkway with M.I.A. and LCD Soundsystem when I became annoyed: here was the commercialization of indie music. I felt better when I learned the program was curated/hosted by Brooklyn Vegan, whom I quite enjoy, schedule permitting. Then he went off on the Klaxons as being undeserving of their slot opening for Bjork this summer, and I was back in a huff: the Klaxons are an awesomer, looser version of TV on the Radio, and they make me want to dance. I want to dance at a Bjork show, not listen to Beirut moan, thank you very much. So no longer annoyed, but not in that peaceful Wanderlust place either.

p.s. I spent a good portion of the year arguing that MRSA precautions were worthless. I would say that MRSA was here to stay, and that the 4 dollar gowns we were each supposed to don prior to entering an infected patient's room were at best a ridiculous waste of resources and at worst a lame panacea. This article and the scientific one to which it links prove me wrong, and that's cool.

p.p.s. I'm still totally creeped out by VRE, but that's because enterococcus mutated in an unexpected manner to acquire resistance whereas MRSA's escape was predictable, easy for its genome, and probably happens all the time.

la la la

Vacating my apartment, I realized there were a few things that would not fit in my storage unit. Two were chairs my mother had hoped to drive home to DC, reupholster and reintegrate into her life. There was also a grungy white bookshelf. Either way, time ran short, and those items ended up on the curb. Over my shoulder running one last time to my storage unit, I told my mother to put my La La out there. She sat La La up in conversation on one of the chairs, and when I got back from my final run, all were gone.

I've slept with La La most nights since 1999. It was an impulse buy at Bed Bath and Beyond as I was moving in to my freshman college dorm, and I've long debated its gender. I've implored many a guest to lie down and cuddle with the thing after making fun of me for sleeping with a teletubby. Usually not convinced, they were at least silenced. La La is gone now, and I'm a little sad.

a paean to the New Yorker

Steeze this: because I'm paid up and already a subscriber at the New Yorker, they will ship me my magazine in Africa at no extra charge. Hooray for mental masturbation on another continent.

My 9/11 New Yorker is going into storage next year alongside most of the rest of my belongings. I miss Susan Sontag.

a passive announcement

The patients enrolled in the study on which I will be working next year will have MDR-TB. They will be confined to their respective tuberculosis hospitals for the intensive phase of their treatment, usually about four months.

Sounds like an occasion for a pomegranate quarantini !

spoilered

Scrubs is the second television show to ruin the ending of the Sixth Sense for me. Now I can't remember the first, and I feel fairly certain I'll never see the film, but I'm still not sure I think that's fair.

In other news, I don't plan on purchasing these sunglasses to wear over my prescription glasses.

Partly because I don't wear glasses, but also because this is the most worthless QVC item since the $15 brush to clean lint out of the lint box in a clothes dryer.
